Fic Commentary Meme

Pick a paragraph (or any passage between... let's say 200 and 600 words) from anything I've written, and comment to this post with that selection. I will then give you a DVD commentary on that snippet: what I was thinking when I wrote it, why I wrote it in the first place, what's going on in the character's heads, why I chose certain words, what this moment means in the context of the rest of the fic, lots of awful puns, and anything else that you'd expect to find on a DVD commentary track.

I saw this meme a couple months ago and always wanted to play around with it. My process is strange even to me at times, but every piece of mine usually has some kind of story--the music I listened to as I wrote it, how I was stalled on a certain scene until inspiration hit during a late-night shower, how the idea even came to me in the first place. So if you're curious about the thought process behind any of my fics (my masterlist is on the front page of this journal), feel free to ask! And if you want, copy this to your own journal and see what you get asked! :)

Lol I'm afraid to post fic memes to my LJ. I'm crazily shy XD

But how bout this? From Ever After:

“I grieved to think how brief the dream of the human intellect had been. It had committed suicide.”

Rose reaches over, swatting the hand holding the book, and he pulls it away, looking up from the book and into her unamused expression. “Oi! What was that for?”

“‘It had committed suicide?’ That’s a fine bedtime story for an infant!”

“It’s a classic! It’s time travel!”

“It’s bloody morbid, that’s what it is.”

LOL, right? It's fun to see what resonated with people, though, for sure!

This bit was actually meant to be a ficlet all on its own--the Doctor reading The Time Machine to his and Rose's baby was just one of those images that came to me and refused to go away. I was looking through notable quotes from the book when I came across that one, and I could just hear Rose chiding him in my head.

I never got beyond those few sentences, and I couldn't figure out what else to do with it, so it languished on my hard drive for a while until the challenge at the LAS comm came up. The thing "before and after" conjured in my mind was the idea of the Doctor and Rose before and after having their child, and suddenly I had something to do with it again.

I ended up being really happy with how that scene turned out. I wanted to do a few things by showing them in that little domestic scene, reading to the baby--one, to introduce the baby, who I named Sarah as a tribute to Elisabeth and Sarah Jane. Two, I wanted it to lead to that conversation between the Doctor and Rose: what will they do if Sarah chooses the path they take? Would Rose be in Jackie's position, or would she not be able to judge? I think it would end up being a little mix of both, so that was where I went with it. All because the Doctor chose The Time Machine as a bedtime story. ;)

Awesome!! I can totally see why that moment stuck in your head! And it's very well done! =D

Thank you! :D I had fun with Ever After; it was nice to write something fluffy, considering that 99.9% of what I write turns out angsty in some way, LOL.

BTW, I've apparently been under a rock for the past few months; I had no idea you'd started writing fic! I friended your fic journal earlier as a way of rectifying this--I know how I'm spending tomorrow now!

Ha understood!!! I'm pretty new to fic writing, but I've found that I need to consciously steer my fluff to stay fluffy dang it lol!! I like angst too XD

Ha it's np!! Originally it started off as an anon fic journal back in May, and I was really shy ... so I kept it anon for a while til I got more comfy =)

I think you are going to get a kick out of The Awakening XD .... the first couple of chapters are based on the s3 finale of Being Erica. You'll see what I mean if you read it lol!! But it will veer off considerably from that point on -- the finale was just so awesome, I couldn't help but be inspired by it! =D

AWESOME! I will definitely have to check that out, then! That finale was incredible; it actually helped me with an Amy/Rory fic I posted a few weeks back (the prompt was that Eleven was all in Amy's head, and I couldn't help but think of what Erica had to go through). They did such a great job with that episode; it was wrenchingly sad but did such an amazing job of showing how far Erica had come.

Oh no I missed that fic!! I'll look on your masterlist to find it =D

Completely agreed! She had such an amazing sense of self - it illustrated her character growth so beautifully!
