As an apology for earlier's angst, here, have some fluff! :D This was for the most recent challenge in doctor_rose_las; the prompt was before and after. I had a lot of fun with this one!

She has been sitting on her hands for three and a half minutes (she knows the exact count; she has been watching the second hand on her watch tick and tick away) in order to stop herself from looking.

The Doctor has no such restraint. He keeps popping in and out, asking how many minutes are left, and she manages to say quite nicely that he’s the Time Lord; he should know. He chuckles at that, though not without a hint of excitement and nervousness, and dashes out again.

He trots back in when another minute and a half has passed. She is still sitting on the closed lid of the toilet, her hands wedged under her thighs, and he seats himself on the edge of the bathtub behind her and wraps his arms gently around her waist. His breath ruffles her hair as he speaks. “Five more minutes?”

“Just about.” She leans comfortably into his chest, closing her eyes and letting his breathing soothe her nerves. “Do you really think we could do it? Even still working for Torchwood?”

“Pete does it, doesn’t he?”

“Yeah, but he’s got Mum. She doesn’t work in the field; we do,” Rose sighs, turning her face into his chest and nuzzling her nose deeper into his t-shirt. Sometimes she misses the suits. “If one or the other of us…”

“Rose Tyler-Smith.” His fingers on her chin, lifting her face to his. A kiss on her forehead, one that finally makes her open her eyes. “I won’t have you talking like that,” he says softly, kissing her lips this time, which makes her smile and blink back the sheen of tears in her eyes.

“What would you rather have me talking like?” she asks softly, and she feels a rush of happiness, anticipation, as he splays his fingers gently over her stomach, tracing circles on the fabric of her top.

“What’re your thoughts on me teaching her Gallifreyan?” he asks with an impish smirk, and she gives a sigh that is half-frustrated and half-bemused (though she’d never in a million years let him know it—it’s like dealing with a small child sometimes; she can’t let on to the slightest hint of inconsistency).

“First off, we don’t know it’s a girl. Second off, we don’t even know if we’re having—”

“I think we do now,” he cuts in, as Rose’s watch beeps and they both share a glance, unmoving. Finally, she nods, and he gets up, putting a hand on her shoulder both for leverage and comfort.

He picks up the plastic stick from the sink counter, staring, somewhat befuddled, at the little window. Over nine hundred years old and confounded by a simple Earth-made pregnancy test; the thought makes her want to laugh.

“Two pink lines,” he announces, looking up at her impassive face and fidgeting a bit, almost nervously. “Where’re the directions? What does that mean—”

She crosses to him, throwing her arms around him and kissing his cheek and then his lips so fast that he barely has any time to register the smile breaking across her face.

“It means we’re going to have to reach a compromise on that Gallifreyan issue sometime in the next eight months,” she says softly, and his whoop of laughter is still enough to make her heart melt.

“I grieved to think how brief the dream of the human intellect had been. It had committed suicide.”

Rose reaches over, swatting the hand holding the book, and he pulls it away, looking up from the book and into her unamused expression. “Oi! What was that for?”

‘It had committed suicide?’ That’s a fine bedtime story for an infant!”

“It’s a classic! It’s time travel!”

“It’s bloody morbid, that’s what it is.”

He leans in to croon at the baby tucked in the crook of Rose’s left arm, and she rolls her eyes even as she grins—she’d never pictured him as the type to coo at a child, but there it went. “Your mum doesn’t want me telling you this story. No, she doesn’t. So how about I tell you about the Big Bad Wolf—” At this, he pecks Rose’s cheek, then Sarah’s. “—and how your mum saved the day?”

“I don’t want her having Dalek nightmares,” Rose protests, though she’s blushing.

“Better than being afraid of some imaginary threat under the bed; at least Daleks are real—”

“And not something she needs to be scared of until she’s at least nine. Or nineteen.”

“And if some charming stranger with big ears and an accent were to approach her when she’s nineteen—”

“—which I don’t think you’d ever allow, seeing as you’ll throttle any boy that comes near her with ‘dishonorable intentions’—”

“Oi, I’m her dad; I’ve got the right,” he objects, before continuing, “and if he promises her an adventure she could’ve never dreamed of, a chance to fight real monsters… would you let her go?”

Rose chews her lip, and she finds that she can see her mother’s side now. She looks down at Sarah, their Sarah, half-asleep in her arms, and she wants to say no. She wants to say that she would deny her daughter the chance.

But Jackie never denied her that, and look where it has gotten her.

She looks up at her husband with a quiet smile, settling into his embrace as he wraps an arm around her. “I would have to,” she says softly. “Because my adventure gave me you.”

She feels him smile as he presses his lips to the top of her head, and just as she, like their daughter, is about to drift off in his arms, she murmurs, “But next time, I pick the bedtime story.”

Haha, I know what you mean. When I first saw it, I just *had* to have it (I was also on a particular 3rd Rock high at the time). It's totally snaggable, if you would like it too. I can't remember who made it at the top of my head, but it's listed in the credits for it.

That was great! I love reading fanfic of their lives together. There where so many unanswered questions with how it left off....I just love that the fans decided not to leave it like that

I love exploring the possibilities! There's just so much there in the idea of the two of them starting a life together. :D Thank you!

Perfect, perfect, perfect!

And Rose getting a sense of things from Jackie's pov... yes, it's like the "mother's curse": when you grow up, I hope you have one just like you! :D

Love it!

Yep, Rose is just not in a position to judge, probably much to Jackie's amusement. ;) Thank you!

So sweet and lovely.

And Sarah. <3 for that. I really think a girl from them WOULD end up named Sarah. What else could he possibly want to name her? :D
Jun. 4th, 2011 03:05 am (UTC)
I'm glad someone picked up on that! :D It only felt right to name her after Sarah Jane. I've seen people knock the idea of the Doctor naming the kids after companions (and yeah, I can see where it would get ridiculous), but we still got to see so clearly what Sarah Jane still meant to Ten, and after Lis' passing, it was just something I felt I had to do.

Jun. 14th, 2011 04:44 am (UTC)
Ooh, yay!! That would be awesome!!

Yay! I'm drafting now; I'm aiming to have it done by tomorrow or Wednesday, barring anything unforeseen coming up. I'm excited! \o/
