From Afar (Fic: Doctor Who, Ficlet)

Title: From Afar
Fandom: Doctor Who
Pairing: Nine, Rose, The Face of Boe
Word Count: 310
Rating: G
Warnings: Spoilers for a certain revelation in "The Last of the Time Lords". You probably know the one I mean.
Disclaimer: Nothing is mine! Nothing whatsoever.
Summary: The Face of Boe sees a duo he thought he'd never see again.
Notes: Written in the light of my rewatch of 1x02, "The End of the World". Everything is somehow harsher and yet more beautiful, knowing the truth about the Face of Boe. Also for Prompt B2 in the Written in the Stars challenge at 5_prompts: Sooner or later, your time will be up.

His attendants are wiping the glass that encases him, checking for damage from the heat that had engulfed the room earlier, but he pays them no heed.

He only watches those two.

“Have pity! Moisturize me! Oh, Doctor!”

The Lady Cassandra is screaming. Rose is about to cry.

“Help her,” she says faintly to the Doctor, and he wants to smile. That’s Rose for you. Cassandra has tried to kill them all and yet he knows the sight of someone, anyone, in pain makes Rose ache.

The Doctor’s voice is flat, cold as steel. “Everything has its time, and everything dies.”

Cassandra bursts in an explosion of skin and bright red blood. This is how Jack knows when it is (feels odd, thinking of himself as Jack again; it’s been so long since then).

This is them before him.

This is the Doctor, cold and emotionless except for the times when his eyes light on Rose—something passes through him then, makes him smile. Jack remembers noticing that right off, those first few days on the TARDIS.

This is Rose, still so young and so new to all of it. This is her before she crosses the void, before a certain exhaustion seeps into her features and her hands begin aching for the cool, reassuring protection of that gun—long before Torchwood, Canary Wharf, the war.

He can’t go to them—timelines. Spoilers, someone back in his home century used to say.

He can’t go to them, but he drinks in the sight of them like cool water.

He has lived so long and seen so many things but none so glorious as the Doctor and Rose Tyler. He might die without ever seeing them again. Someday, his time will be up.

One last sight of them, he tells himself, this last glimpse of them… that will have been enough.

This is so wonderful. I've never thought of a Nine/Rose/Jack story using the Face Of Boe before now. A gorgeous idea having Jack farewell-ing Nine & Rose from afar, and many millenia after he first met them. I love the emotion you've put in it and how you've got their relationship (especially FoB/Jack's observation of Nine/Rose) so perfect. The 'spoilers' reference is great too. Great work! :D

Thank you so much! :)

Admittedly, I'd never thought of using Jack as the Face of Boe, either, until I rewatched 1x02 and realized he was watching them in the background the whole time, and it really broke my heart and made me so happy at the same time. I love the implications of Jack possibly being the Face of Boe, because it means the Doctor was there for him as he died, and that their friendship becomes something really enduring. The Doctor and Rose defined Jack and really came to mean something to him, I feel. There's that moment in "Utopia" where Jack is just as happy as the Doctor to know that Rose is alive, and when you couple that with him visiting her as she grew up, I think that really means something. I think he also recognized how much the Doctor and Rose meant to each other, which is why I put in that little observation.

And hee, I do toy so much with the idea of Jack and River knowing each other, especially since they're both from the 51st century. I had fun sneaking that in there! ;)

(Icon love, btw--you might've noticed from the blog title that I love Craig Ferguson's line!)

I've just recently rewatched season 1 again myself and of all the new!Who series I think it got the emotion and relationships just right. I love that Nine, Rose & Jack are all a little broken when they first appear but it's their journey together that fixes them and makes them all whole again. That's the biggest part of why I love those characters and that particular series the most so far. The finale is just so heartbreaking and satisfying at the same time.

Jack and River would totally have known one another at some point in wach of their timelines. I find the wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey nature of both their live really fascinating. When/If the series ever ends in the future I want to go back and watch all River's episodes chronologically from her point of view. I think it would be really interesting to see the life of the Doctor and Co. from her point of view.

I did notice that quote. It was part of the reason that I used that particular icon. Craig Ferguson is just beyond awesome sometimes. :D
